Leading from the Middle
Why do we need leadership? Why isn’t the “command and control” style of management considered appropriate anymore? Why should we start to consider emotions in the modern business environment? Why do we have to stop ordering and start asking? What changed the business environment? In absence of authority, could middle management bring positive change?
The gradual transformation of land ownership and governance in medieval European feudal societies, the rise of the bourgeoisie, and the emergence of modern (and contemporary) capitalist societies were all part of a millennial cultural evolution that had its roots in the dawn of the European Renaissance and its flowering in the Enlightenment of the 18th century and the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century.
This cultural evolution introduced many new concepts, chief among them the concept of human rights. The birth of the concept of the rightful treatment of all men marked a new era in human history and mandated a new set of rules with which to govern his (and more recently, also her) economic, political, and social affairs.
The work environment was not an exception; it had to adapt and cater to the needs of the modern worker. From then on, business theorists realized that the long-standing command and control style of business management was dying away and that new theories of governance would have to be developed to deal with the modern rights-oriented employee.
Thus, the old master–slave relationship gradually transformed into the contemporary leader–follower form.
But, do these new theories work for us?
